Washington, nuit du 25 février 1862. Dans le cimetière de Oak Hill, près de la Maison-Blanche, quelque chose se prépare. En pleine nuit, Abraham Lincoln, dévasté de chagrin, vient se recueillir en secret sur sa sépulture. Il croit être seul. Mais voici que des voix se font entendre et que des caveaux jaillissent des âmes errantes, prises au piège entre deux mondes, dans une sorte de lieu intermédiaire (le bardo de la tradition tibétaine).
